It's especially frustrating that publishers do not feel compelled to put the copy protection information on the box so that you don't find that out until you install the product, and by then you've opened the package and it's too late to return the product to the store!

I agree with you that the final insult is the blasé attitude Starforce oozes from every orifice. They are just sleazeballs though and through. It warms my heart to see their biggest gaming customers (Ubisoft, for one) kicking Starforce to the curb due to overwhelming user protests and even class-action lawsuits.

The best one can do is to simply boycott publishers who use this protection. It does nothing but penalize legitimate software owners, and I'd hope that'd be the last thing software publishers want to do.

Thanks for writing, annoyed. I hope you don't run into too much trouble in acquiring a refund.

I just installed Dawn of Magic game (developer - deep silver) which came with this Starforce cd anti piracy software. AFTER the game had finished installing i went to run the game & the "protection software" booted up instead asking if it was ok to install. My first reaction was one of concern not having seen this kind of cd protection thing before & having used pcs to game avidly for 6 years. 3 choices 1 Yes install 2 No do not install (& wont be able to play the game) 3 View FAQ. After viewing the faq & reading the company's deny deny deny attitude i decided to seek an alternative review of this CD protection software. After reading many blogs & official game magazine reviews i realise I was VERY lucky not to have installed this heavy unstable potentially pc life threatening chunk of unnecessary tripe. There are blogs & reviews in the hundreds all stating something wrong with the software & potential hardware failure dangers. This was the line that really got me quoted from starforce's own site. "It is obvious that all the rumours around StarForce hazards are spread by international piracy groups. Our recent has just proven that StarForce does not damage optical drives." I've never seen such ridiculous blatant ignorance of the facts & insults to intelligence.

Down with starforce. GG UBISOFT.

Sorry Deep Silver your game looked good but not worth the potential threat to my machine. :P
